Just celebrating some of Uncle Iroh’s most memorable lines from Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. (These are not in a strict ranked order, but rather a curated “top ten” based on wisdom, emotion, and fan favorites.)
1. “Sometimes life is like this dark tunnel. You can’t always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but if you just keep moving… you will come to a better place.”
A beautiful metaphor for perseverance. Even when things feel hopeless, Iroh reminds us that moving forward can carry us into light.
– Avatar: The Last Airbender, Book 2, Chapter 20 — “The Crossroads of Destiny”
2. “In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself. That is the meaning of inner strength.”
Iroh teaches that hope isn’t always external. Sometimes, you have to ignite it within.
–Avatar: The Last Airbender, Book 2, Chapter 5 – “Avatar Day“
3. “Perfection and power are overrated. I think you are very wise to choose happiness and love instead.”
A gentle rebuke of ambition for ambition’s sake. Sometimes the “best” path is the one that brings peace, connection, and meaning.
–Avatar: The Last Airbender, Season 2, Episode 20 — “The Crossroads of Destiny”
4. “Life happens wherever you are, whether you make it or not.”
You can’t pause life until you feel ready. We live in the present, and even when the present isn’t ideal, it’s still life.
–Avatar: The Last Airbender, Season 2, Episode 14 — “City of Walls and Secrets”
5. “There is nothing wrong with a life of peace and prosperity. I suggest you think about what it is that you want from your life, and why.”
For Zuko (and for us), Iroh encourages asking what truly matters beyond expectations or status.
–Avatar: The Last Airbender, Book 2, Chapter 17 – “Lake Laogai”
6. “While it is always best to believe in oneself, a little help from others can be a great blessing.”
Even the strongest spirits benefit from companions. Pride need not isolate us.
–Avatar: The Last Airbender, Book 2, Chapter 8 — “The Chase”
7. “Pride is not the opposite of shame, but its source. True humility is the only antidote to shame.”
Letting go of pride doesn’t mean giving up — it means learning to value yourself without needing the world’s approval.
–Avatar: The Last Airbender, Book 2, Chapter 9 – “Bitter Work“
8. “Are you so busy fighting you cannot see your own ship has set sail?”
One of Iroh’s more poetic lines — a nudge to pause and reflect, lest we miss what’s already unfolding.
–Avatar: The Last Airbender, Book 1, Chapter 10 — “The Waterbending Scroll”
9. “Many things that seem threatening in the dark become welcoming when we shine light on them.”
Iroh’s wisdom transcends generations. In Legend of Korra, he offers this reminder: fear often diminishes when exposed to understanding and compassion.
–The Legend of Korra, Book 2, Chapter 10 — “A New Spiritual Age”
10. “You will find that if you look for the light, you can often find it. But if you look for the dark, that is all you will ever see.”
A balanced, powerful reminder of perspective. The lens through which we view life matters.
–The Legend of Korra, Book 2, Chapter 10 — “A New Spiritual Age”
